چکیده

Clouds are important for their radiative forcing, control of water vapour, chemical interactions, and effects on trace gas retrievals from remote sensing. Historically, clouds have been observed principally using nadir sounding but more recently limb-sounding instruments have demonstrated their sensitivity particularly to sub-visible cirrus. The Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS), launched on ENVISAT in March 2002, provides unprecedented infra-red emission spectra of clouds at high spectral resolution (0.025 cm unapodised), with vertical sampling of 3 km from 6 to 68 km. Here we show that the cloud index (CI) method of cloud detection, as implemented in the ESA operational processor for MIPAS, is reasonably robust to changes in altitude and water vapour concentrations at 12 km and above in the tropics and mid-latitudes, and in polar winter atmospheres between 15 and 27 km. Using CI, we then present the first cloud frequency distributions from MIPAS.

Detection of Cloud Effects in Mipas Spectral Data and Implications for the Mipas Operational Processor

The Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS) instrument measures the intensity of atmospheric radiation emitted in the infra -red spectral region in five bands ranging from 685 cm to 2410 cm. Previous low spectral resolution observations of such infra-red emissions by the Cryogenic Infrared Spectrometers and Telescopes for the Atmosphere (CRISTA) had revealed the presen...

Mipas Observations of Clouds and Their Effects on Level 2 Trace Gas Products

The Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS) instrument measures the intensity of atmospheric radiation emitted in the infra-red spectral region at high spectral resolution in five bands ranging from 685 cm to 2410 cm. Clouds affect the appearance of the measured spectra at all wavelengths which are sensitive to emission from the layer of atmosphere containing the cloud...

Polar stratospheric cloud observations by MIPAS on ENVISAT: detection method, validation and analysis of the northern hemisphere winter 2002/2003

The Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS) on ENVISAT has made extensive measurements of polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs) in the northern hemisphere winter 2002/2003. A PSC detection method based on a ratio of radiances (the cloud index) has been implemented for MIPAS and is validated in this study with respect to ground-based lidar and space borne occultation measur...

Spectroscopic evidence for NAT, STS, and ice in MIPAS infrared limb emission measurements of polar stratospheric clouds

We have analyzed mid-infrared limb-emission measurements of polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs) by the Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS) during the Antarctic winter 2003 with respect to PSC composition. Coincident Lidar observations from McMurdo were used for comparison with PSC types 1a, 1b and 2. Application of new refractive index data of β-NAT have allowed to a...

General comments: overall quality of the discussion paper This study introduces and describes a PMC dataset from MIPAS IR emission observations, shortly presents the retrieval method that was already published in a previous paper, provides evaluation of its quality by comparison of MIPAS ice mass density and cloud altitude to AIM SOFIE observations, and discusses MIPAS cloud properties in relat...
